Eczema Clothing for Babies and Children: Our Recommendations

Another great post from itchylittleworld.com – Natural remedies for eczema to soothe your itchy little world..

By Laura Dolgy (Bio)

When your little one is suffering from eczema, it can be the most stressful and painful experience you will ever go through as a parent. It’s never fair to watch any child suffer from relentless pain, itching and infections.

When parents are first dealing with eczema, they will usually resort to healing their eczema baby with treatments. Although many treatments, can provide relief for itchy or painful eczema, did you know that some clothing can help provide relief as well? This week, we’re discussing eczema clothing for babies and children that can help soothe the skin and or offer protection.

Please keep in mind that although these products can relieve eczema, we are in no way medical professionals. If you’re experiencing severe eczema symptoms like fever or an infection, it is best to seek medical advice immediately.

If your little one is suffering from eczema, then know that we’re here to always support you. Whether it’s asking questions in our comment sections on our blog, or sending us a question by email, we will be there to help you through this difficult time.

If you’re just reading our blog for the first time, you should know that Jennifer Roberge, who founded and edits this blog, has also dealt with her own child’s severe eczema. In fact, it took her YEARS to finally heal her son’s eczema. If you’d like to learn more about their story and journey, make sure to check out: Natural Remedies for Eczema: What Worked for My Son.

So, Why Eczema Clothing?

Like we mentioned, natural treatments can help eczema and many sufferers find relief in just treatments alone. However, what happens when the skin is already scratched up and itchy? Babies and children are notorious for scratching their wounds for quick relief, but scratching eczema only makes it worse.

Eczema clothing is an integral part of healing eczema because the skin can never fully heal if it’s constantly being torn apart by relentless scratching. So while natural eczema cream is great for treating the itch and moisturizing the skin, it’s important to protect the skin from irritants and even more important, from scratching!

Our Picks for Eczema Clothing for Babies & Children

When picking out eczema clothing for babies and children, it’s important to keep in mind which area of the skin you’re treating, as well as any allergies your little one might have. If your eczema baby is suffering from allergies, then you will want to opt for clothing that is hypo-allergenic and stay far away from clothing that has either latex or polyester.

Our list below includes recommendations for clothing that we’ve seen work wonders. If you happen to know of any others that have worked for your child, please share them below in our comment section.

ScratchMeNot Mittens

These mittens work so incredibly well at keeping little fingers from scratching and irritating the skin. Eczema gets worse on an itch-scratch cycle, so by eliminating the possibility to scratch their skin endlessly, your child’ skin is able to begin the healing process. The ScratchMeNot Original Mittens come in different sizes for babies and children. The mittens can be worn all day or night and either left open for play or closed to prevent scratching. Stretchy cotton, bamboo and lycra give these mittens a nice fit that is hard to wiggle out of. The ScratchMeNot Cotton Mittens are made for kids with the most sensitive of skin and are made of 100% cotton.

What makes these ScratchMeNot Mittens special? The super soft silk mitten AND the unique cardigan-like design makes them incredibly difficult to get out of.

WrapESoothe Wraps

A great option for soothing inflamed and itchy eczema skin, is both wet wrap therapy and dry wrapping. The process requires a bath, moisturizer and a layer of clothing to seal in moisture, so that it can further permeate the skin.

Depending on where your child’s eczema is on his or her body, you’ll want to opt for different wraps. For example, these WrapESoothe body bands are best used for localized eczema either on your child’s arm or leg like behind the knee. If your little one is suffering from full body eczema or has patches all over, make sure to check out either this WrapESoothe Eczema Suit for children up to 3 years old, or for older children ages 4-5, these WrapESoothe Pants and WrapESoothe Shirt are perfect for dry and wet wrapping.

What makes WrapESoothe wraps special? The fabric is made of TENCEL fabric which retards bacterial growth and retains water longer than cotton making it great for wet wrapping!

Pajamas with Mittens

Is your little one constantly scratching themselves in their sleep? There are a variety of sleep sacks for babies and pajamas for children that can help give them (and you!) a restful sleep.

For little, little ones, make sure to check out either the Bamboo Bubby Bag Toddler Sleep Sack with Mittens or the Eczema Baby Sleep Sack with Mittens. Both are excellent at eliminating scratching, as they include mittens and can easily be opened from the bottom to make middle of the night diaper changes a breeze. If you’re looking to also stop thumb sucking, these are great choices!

For older children, Cotton Comfort created a One-Piece Footed Pajama for Kids and separate Scratch Mitten Pajama Tops and Footed Pajama Pants for Kids. All pieces are 100% Organic Cotton and include mittens (non-removable), so that your child does not scratch themselves subconsciously in their sleep.

What makes them special? Soft cooling cotton and bamboo fabrics. And mittens, of course!

Underwear

Although underwear is not necessarily used to heal eczema, it can be worn to prevent eczema instead. If your child is suffering from eczema in the groin or butt area due to textile dermatitis, then you’ll want to check out both these Boy’s Latex Free Underwear and Girl’s Latex Free Underwear.

What makes them special? They are made from 100% organic cotton, latex free, formaldehyde free, bleach free, and chlorine free.

Talk about pure!

 How about Laundry for Eczema?

You can have the best clothing made from the best fabrics for eczema, BUT if you use a toxic laundry detergent, you could just be adding to your eczema troubles.

If you read the above mentioned post, you’ll discover that laundry detergents are full of harsh chemicals. And even the most natural detergents can leave a very alkaline residue on the skin which can be very irritating. So, when your child has eczema it’s important to look at laundry solutions that won’t trigger a flare or make things worse. The SmarkKlean Laundry ball was made for sensitive skin. What makes it special? It does not contain any added fragrance or brightening agents which can be harsh on skin and leaves absolutely no detergent or soap residue. PLUS it’s 100% hypoallergenic, which makes it a great detergent alternative for babies and children suffering from eczema.

I’ve tried Natural Treatments AND Clothing – NOTHING WORKS!

If you seem to be doing everything right and your child’s eczema is just not going away, you might want to try healing from within. The best eczema treatments for babies as well as clothing can go a long way, but if your child’s gut is unhealthy or they are actually sensitive to a certain food, the eczema will be more difficult to heal. Best Eczema Treatments for Babies: Your Guide to Natural Care

Did you know that, according to the National Eczema Society, as many as 10% of all infants in the US have some form of eczema? Those are pretty worrying odds and something a new parent should never have to think about. Unfortunately, baby eczema is a reality. In this post, we breakdown both the most common forms of eczema as well as the best eczema treatments for babies.

I’ve heard countless stories and have talked to many parents whose children are suffering or were suffering from eczema. They have tried countless doctor visits, treatments and medications to help improve their child’s skin, but many have been unsuccessful. In fact, my own son’s battle with eczema is the main reason why I decided to start this blog and The Eczema Company – I knew how hard it was to see your child suffer with eczema and the itchy skin and sleepless nights and I just wanted to help others going through the same thing! If you haven’t had a chance to read my story yet, I recommend you read Natural Remedies for Eczema – What Worked For My Son.

Battling baby eczema is no easy journey, and it’s not always easier as they grow older and they don’t grow out of it, but understanding the most common types of eczema, as well as learning about effective eczema treatments for babies and children will make the fight that much easier. This I promise you. Because once you’re armed with resources and ideas, as well as a good physician or natural practitioner who will support you on your journey, you’ll feel quite empowered. Eczema won’t feel like it controls your life any longer. Sure, not every day is going to be perfect. There will be ups and downs and days you still feel lost, I know because I’ve been there. But in general, arming yourself with a good practitioner and the right information will put you in control and get you on a forward moving track to better skin and itch free days.

Please keep in mind that although these tips have worked for many of my readers and customers, I am in no way a medical professional. If you’re experiencing severe eczema or have a topical infection, it is always best to seek medical advice immediately.

Before discussing the best baby eczema treatment, it’s important to distinguish various forms of eczema seen in infants.

Atopic Dermatitis/Eczema

This is the most common form of eczema among babies, children and adults. Normally, the eczema will manifest in red, dry, scaly patches on various parts of the body – often times in creases like behind the knees and elbows or on the neck under the chin. These patches are extremely itchy and can cause babies to incessantly scratch or rub their skin to alleviate the itch. With atopic dermatitis, often the child may grow out of eczema only to develop allergies or asthma, or may experience them altogether. Read more in What Is the Atopic March?

Diaper Rash

Most people don’t realize that diaper rash is actually a form of dermatitis that results in red, angry looking eczema. Skin will appear both red and irritated, while small blisters can appear if the irritation is more severe. This rash can be produced by bacteria from both a child’s urine and stool sitting in a diaper, or from a reaction to ingredients or materials used in the wipes or diaper itself. Switching to DIY wipes and cloth diapers is a great natural alternative for babies experiencing diaper rash. We’ve heard countless cases where this has completely resolved chronic, severe diaper rash. We didn’t have issues with diaper rash with my son, but we did try Fuzzibunz swim cloth diapers for my daughter. It’s also important to track how your baby responds to new foods, as acids in certain foods can cause further irritation – pears caused mild irritation for my son’s bottom and beets were a HUGE problem for my daughter’s sensitive little toosh.

Cradle cap

This condition is basically infantile seborrheic dermatitis, a form of dermatitis that is prevalent in both children and adults. Both my kids had this for years! After checking my 8-year-old son’s scalp the other day I discovered he still has a tiny bit and my 6-year-old daughter definitely still has some patches as well. Cradle cap is caused by sebum, an oily substance produced by the glands that cakes on the skin. Although it is usually not bothersome to babies, dryness can cause some discomfort and annoyance. I don’t necessarily have full on seborrheic dermatitis, but I do have trouble with excessive sebum production, which gives me waxy, greasy hair after a shower.

So, What are the Best Eczema Treatments for Babies?

Because your eczema baby has extremely delicate skin, it is best to not use any products that contain chemicals or synthetic ingredients. With my son, I found the best results in all natural products like balms because they didn’t contain any form of alcohol, which burned him terribly. This is why I only recommend natural eczema treatments for babies that are gentle on soft, delicate skin and that don’t contain any harsh chemicals or things like alcohol.

Balms/Creams

One of the most important steps in healing any form of eczema is to moisturize. Because the skin barrier is damaged, it’s important to repair the barrier by moisturizing it. One of the best baby eczema creams is our Organic Manuka Skin Soothing Cream that combines healing Manuka honey and oil with organic nut-free tree oils, as well as beeswax to nourish the skin without any burn or sting. If you’re looking for specific products that are aimed towards Diaper rash or Cradle Cap, using herbal treatments like Emily Skin Soothers’ Itchy Eczema – Baby & Adult Soother and Severe Diaper Rash Skin Soother can help wonders as well!

Clothing

While moisturizing will help heal your baby’s damaged skin, sometimes the itch can be too much. Not only does itching not allow for the eczema to properly heal, yet it can cause more severe infections like Staph. Using scratch preventive eczema clothing like ScratchMeNot Flip Mitten Sleeves for Babies or Goumi Kid’s Infant Eczema Mittens can help your little one’s eczema heal. For cradle cap that is irritated and bothersome, this Goumi Hat is very helpful.

Tags and seams can really rub and irritate the skin, so consider pajamas like those from Cotton Comfort in 100% organic cotton, which were made for children with eczema. They make a one piece footed pajama, as well as a scratch mittens pajama top and coordinating footed pajama pants. These pajamas are soft and soothing and just what I wish were around when my son’s eczema was severe.

Wet Wraps

For more severe bouts of eczema, wet wrap therapy is a miracle treatment. When my son needed quick relief, we always turned to wet wraps to ease his flare-ups. Wet wrapping is very simple and requires both an emollient moisturizer and clothing to seal in moisture for a minimum of 2 hours. For baby wet wrapping, the WrapESoothe Eczema Suit is the perfect solution available for children 6 months up to 3T. For children 4-5T, there are wet wrapping treatment shirts and separate pants available.

To learn more about wet wrapping, check out How to Use Wet Wrap Therapy for Eczema in 6 Easy Steps!

Although baby eczema is a difficult journey, there are treatments and remedies that can help alleviate both the discomfort and stress naturally. Personally, I went through so many trials and errors before really understanding what could heal my son’s eczema. We tried a variety of natural treatments that eventually worked, yet running a proper elimination diet and figuring out his allergies and intolerances made all the difference.

Eczema: Is It Dangerous in Babies?

Eczema in babies is visually distressing to parents and frustrating for the baby.  However, eczema is not a dangerous health condition.  Eczema tends to run in families who often have a history of allergies.  While people of any age can have eczema it is most common in infants. Most babies will outgrow eczema by the time they are 2 or 3 years old.  By the time they reach adulthood, more than half will have outgrown the disorder.  Eczema can be treated with ointments and lotions.

Eczema is a chronic skin disorder due to a hypersensitive reaction in the skin which causes it to become inflamed. The inflammation causes a red, scaly and itchy rash.  In babies it is often seen on the cheeks, elbows and knees, but the rash can occur anywhere on the skin.  Other common areas for the rash to appear are in the folds and creases of the skin like behind the knee. The most irritating side effect of eczema is the itching, sometimes almost unbearable.  As with any rash, scratching irritates the skin more often causing painful sores.

The symptoms from eczema can be made worse by dry skin, temperature changes, environmental irritants, water and stress.  Some foods make the symptoms worse and you can try eliminating these from your baby’s diet.  Foods to watch are wheat, eggs, fish, peanuts and soy.  In addition, there is some evidence that dust mites aggravate eczema and make the rash worse.  Using a HEPA filter in your home’s air conditioning and vacuum can help reduce dust and pollen. Wash baby’s clothes in dye-free, perfume-free soaps and use dryer sheets free of the same.  Clothes made from 100% cotton will be most comfortable for baby with an eczema rash and will be less likely to cause hypersensitivity in the skin.

Rashes caused from eczema can be treated with ointments and lotions depending on the stage of the rash. Prescription ointments may be necessary to effectively control the rash. Avoid products that may contain irritants like alcohol and perfume. Your baby’s pediatrician will have the best advice on what medications to use on an eczema rash.

Eczema soap for babies ? 4 Secrets to keeping Eczema at bay.

If you have a new angel baby in your life skin care is one of your top concerns. Just about every mother can tell a story of diaper rash, cradle cap or eczema that just wouldn’t go away. Like any Mom you will try just about any idea or advice that someone gives you. You look for that magic soap that will make it all go away. Some items you try work, but for a short time. So you end up frustrated and at a doctor’s office asking for help. Usually, you walk away with an expensive prescription for a cream that works, but that rash or eczema comes back once the presecription is used up and you don’t know why. Here are the secrets we find work best for dealing with eczema for your angel baby.

Understand the remedy is not in the soap you’re using but in the products you’re avoiding. This is the golden rule when it comes to finding soap for eczema or any skin care product for your baby’s eczema. Your angel baby’s eczema and rashs are often triggered by exposure to something, not by a lack of using soap or lotions.

Eliminate the exposure to sulfates. If you could only do one thing to help out your little one’s sensitive skin this would be it. Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate are just a few of the common forms. Sulfates are in laundry detergent, liquid soap, dish soap, hand soap, shampoo and just about any cleaning product. It’s even in toothpaste and some hand lotions and body lotions. While sulfates do a good job at cleaning away dirt and oil they also do a great job at irritating skin and especially baby skin. They are a very small molecule and can penetrate the pores of your skin causing irritation. So when shopping for soap or lotions for your infant or toddler look for products that are sulfate free.

Look for all natural body products. Caution: Just because something says “natural” on the label doesn’t make it so, but it’s a good start when shopping. TRUE natural products will not contain sulfates, parabens, siloxanes, methicones or dimethicones.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. The best defense is often a good offense. Keep your loved one’s skin hydrated even when their eczema isn’t bad. Once you get control of their eczema and all is well remember it can come back at any time. Use that all natural lotion you found and keep your angel baby skin supple and soft.
