Studies Indicate Children Benefit from Consuming Fish Oil For Eczema

Another great post from itchylittleworld.com – Natural remedies for eczema to soothe your itchy little world..

Medical studies can be difficult to understand and use terms we often find confusing or unclear. The following studies discuss ‘allergic disease’ and if children benefit from taking fish oil for eczema.

What is ‘allergic disease’ and how is it related to eczema? Eczema, asthma and allergies (like hay fever) when discussed together are called Atopy. Atopy is just the genetic tendency to develop one of these diseases. All of these diseases share an increased immune response to allergens. So If your mom has hay fever and your father has asthma and your aunt suffers from eczema then your family is expressing atopy. You will be more likely to have one of those diseases if someone in your family has them.

Currently, there is a lot of discussion of the Allergic March and no it’s not what you’re thinking! The allergies don’t just happen in March! Allergic march refers to the order that children get these diseases. It starts with eczema, then allergies, then asthma and finally hay fever. Not every child with eczema will get hay fever but the chances are higher. That is why studies research all of these diseases together. If you can reduce the chances of getting one disease it often means you can reduce your chances for all.

Learn more about Atopic March from our blog post: What is the Atopic March?

The following studies are very practical for you and your family, as they ask the question: Does fish or fish oil help eczema? Yes it can.

In all of the following studies, the introduction of fish oil for eczema was beneficial. However, the most beneficial time of introduction was 6 – 12 months years of age. One study showed that introducing fish within 9 months of life (who had it once a week) reduced their chances of developing eczema (1). It also did not matter whether it was omega-3 fish or not. Just consuming fish reduced the risk. Another study also concluded the same results but in relation to asthma symptoms (2).

One study found that introducing fish to children under a year old held a reduced risk of allergic disease, food sensitization and inhaled allergens (hay fever) during the first 4 years of life (4). In fact it actually decreased the allergic march.

Lastly, eating fish may even be protective well beyond 4 years of life. More than 3,000 children were followed in Sweden with questionnaires about their diet until the age of 12 and given blood tests to determine how allergic they were. The results showed that 80% of children who were one year of age ate fish regularly, at least once a week. If a parent had an allergic disease in this group, the children that ate more fish (more than 2-3 times a month) had less eczema than those who consumed fish once a month (5).

If you or your family suffer from any of these diseases, introducing fish oil for eczema may help reduce their risk of developing other allergies too. Also introducing children to fish earlier (at a year old) sets them up with proper life-long eating habits.

What fish should you feed your family? The Environmental Working Group has a guideline on choosing fish that are low in toxins and high in omega-3 fats. Their top recommendation goes to those clean fish and seafood that are high in omega-3 fat. David Suzuki also has a list of the Top 10 Sustainable Seafood Picks.

Based on these two lists, these are some healthy, sustainable fish choices:

  • “Closed Containment” Salmon – David Suzuki only recommends farmed salmon raised in “closed containment“. Avoid open-net farmed “Atlantic Salmon” which is now genetically modified and not required to be labeled as such. Wild salmon is not a sustainable fish although it is a healthy choice.
  • Wild Sardines – The best are from Canada and U.S.Pacific and are purse seine caught like these.
  • Farmed OystersThis is a good sustainable brand.
  • Wild Mackerel – Best from the US or Canadian coasts.
  • Wild Herring – Best from the US or Canadian coasts. This is a great one.

If your little one simply won’t eat fish at all, try a supplement. Nordic Naturals is a great brand with low mercury levels, no GMOs, and derived from 100% wild cod.

Practical Take-Aways:

  • Introduce your children to eating fish before 1 year of age if possible.
  • Continue serving fish to your family once a week.
  • Choose fish that are low in mercury, sustainable and are High Omega-3.
  • Try a high quality fish oil supplement if your child simply won’t eat fish.

Independent trial showed No Significant Benefit of Silk Clothing for Eczema kids

An eczema study1 published in April 2017 showed that there was

little evidence of clinical or economic benefit of using silk garments in addition to standard care, compared with standard care alone, in children with moderate to severe eczema.

As always, the team of researchers from the University of Nottingham in the U.K had taken on clinical studies that address questions raised by doctors and patients, with the view of having a direct impact on clinical practice. They had conducted very practical studies like softened water eczema trial and compared the efficacy of a short burst of potent topical corticosteroids versus prolonged period of mild corticosteroids. Their website also maps out the systematic reviews on eczema and list their ongoing studies (also found at the bottom of this post).

For this study, the key points are below:

Nature of study: Parallel-group, randomised, controlled, observer-blind trial

Participants: Children aged 1 to 15 year old with moderate to severe eczema; 300 children were included: 42% girls, 79% white, mean age 5 year old

Randomized groups: Participants were randomised to receive standard eczema care plus silk clothing (100% sericin-free silk garments; DermaSilk or DreamSkin) or standard care alone.

Measurement: At baseline, 2, 4 and 6 months against the Eczema Area and Severity Index (“EASI”)

Outcome: No evidence of a difference between the groups in eczema severity (EASI score) assessed by research nurses

Purpose of the study: Silk clothing is available on prescription (and online) but the randomized controlled trials previously done were for small group of participants. To provide direction for clinical practice as to whether to recommend silk clothing, this study was taken on. Silk garment claimed beneficial for eczema as they are smooth, helped regulate humidity and temperature, reduce scratching damage and have anti-microbial properties. These are important qualities that would benefit eczema to reduce scratching (versus a ‘scratchy’ fabric like wool), keep the skin cool and reduce likelihood of flucuating temperature triggering eczema flareups and reduce bacteria load as eczema skin is prone to staph bacteria colonization. However, from the outcome of this study, it would appear that standard eczema care such as regular emollient use and topical corticosteroids (or topical calcineurin inhibitors) for controlling inflammation would be adequate.

Study by the researchers at the University of Nottingham, UK on Efficacy of Silk Clothing for Eczema Children

Study by the researchers at the University of Nottingham, UK

Practical implication:

In my view, this study would really get parents who are spending a lot of money on silk clothing/ bedding to question if such money needs to be spent. These silk garments are not cheap but parents pay for them due to positive testimonies, anti-inflammatory/ anti-microbial properties of silk and that these clothing are soft, free of dye and will not irritate the skin (interviewed Dermasilk here). However, a lower-cost alternative of cotton may work as well, with standard care for eczema.

My personal take is if you’re seeing benefits for your child with silk clothing and can afford it, there is no reason to stop using the clothing. However, if it hasn’t seemed to make much difference and you feel confident that the eczema therapeutics measures that you use for your child are sufficient, then it makes sense not to spend that money. See this post for the review of various eczema therapeutics and also the review study that Nottingham University had done.

A new Phase III study presented at EULAR 2012, the Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism, shows that patients with active psoriatic arthritis (PsA) treated with Ustekinumab (UST) 90mg were more than twice as likely to achieve the study’s primary endpoint, ACR20* at 24 weeks, than those treated with placebo (49.5% vs 22.8%). 42.4% of patients treated with UST 45mg were also more likely to achieve ACR20 at 24 weeks compared to placebo.

Significant improvements were also seen with UST 45mg and 90mg in ACR50* (24.9% and 27.9% respectively vs 8.7%), in ACR70* (12.2% and 14.2% respectively vs 2.4%) and in DAS28-CRP** responses at week 24 vs placebo (65.9% and 67.6% for UST 45mg and 90mg respectively vs 34.5%). Changes from baseline in HAQ-DI*** at week 24 were also significantly greater in patients treated with UST versus placebo and for a greater proportion of patients these changes were clinically meaningful (?0.3). http://www.eczemablog.net/

In addition, patients in the UST groups who were affected with enthesitis (n=425) or dactylitis (n=286) at baseline, showed greater improvements at week 24 than those in the placebo groups.

“There are a number of patients with psoriatic arthritis who do not respond to currently available treatment options, including biologic medicines targeting TNF. As physicians, we struggle to manage such people as well as we would like,” commented Professor Iain McInnes, lead study author from University of Glasgow, Scotland. “The development of this new medicine is a welcome step forward. These results highlight not only Ustekinumab’s efficacy but also its promising safety profile. We look forward now to seeing how it compares in trials with standard treatments.”

Safety profiles were similar between the two groups. The proportion of patients suffering from one or more adverse events was 41.8% in the UST group compared to 42% in the placebo group. Infections were the most common adverse event; serious adverse events (>1) were reported in 1.7% UST and 2% placebo of patients.

This double-bind placebo controlled trial followed 615 patients with active PsA (?5 swollen joint counts and ?5 tender joint counts; c-reactive protein ?0.3mg/dL) despite treatment with disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and/or non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Patients were randomised to UST 45mg, 90mg or placebo at weeks zero, four and 12 weeks thereafter. At week 16, patients with <5% improvement in tender joint counts and swollen joint counts entered blinded early escape (PBO to UST 45mg, UST 45mg to UST 90mg, UST 90mg to UST 90mg). Stable concomitant methotrexate (MTX) use was permitted but not mandated. Nearly half of the patients studied used concomitant MTX at baseline but this did not alter the likelihood of benefit of UST.

*ACR (American College of Rheumatology) criteria measures improvement in tender or swollen joint counts and improvement in three of the following five parameters: acute phase reactant (such as sedimentation rate), patient assessment, physician assessment, pain scale and disability/functional questionnaire. ACR20 refers to a 20% improvement in tender/swollen joint counts, as well as three of the five other criteria. ACR50 refers to a 50% improvement and ACR70 refers to a 70% improvement.
**DAS28 (Disease Activity Score) is an index used by physicians to measure how active an individual’s RA is. It assesses number of tender and swollen joints (out of a total of 28), levels of C-reactive protein (CRP, a protein found in the blood, the levels of which rise in response to inflammation), and the patient’s ‘global assessment of global health’. A higher score indicates more active disease. A score of <2.6 indicates that the patient is in remission.
***HAQ DI (Health Assessment Questionnaire – Disease Index) is a patient questionnaire that measures function and health-related quality of life through measuring a patient’s ability to perform everyday tasks.

6 Ways Acupuncture Could Benefit Your Health

Acupuncture had been practised for thousands and thousands of years over time, perfecting and refining the techniques used. Extensively studied, acupuncture has shown significant results for those with ongoing health issues or problems. Although some still remain sceptical, there are some ways acupuncture could benefit your health that might be worth trying. I’ve personally found acupuncture to work wonders for my ongoing back problems. While it might not work for everyone here are some of the ways acupuncture could help you…

Weight loss

For a lot of people, becoming healthier and losing weight is the main priority for their health. Acupuncture is no miracle cure that can help an individual lose weight if they are still eating excess calories and not exercising. However, people easily fall into patterns and their bodies follow. This could prove to be difficult when trying to lose weight for health reasons. Some people may find that excess weight may have underlying issues such as an energetic imbalance. Consumption of sugars and highly refined foods and drink can lead to fatigue, with the reliance on these same caffeinated foods and drinks making it hard to break the cycle. Acupuncture could help break this cycle for some people and give your body an energy boost allowing you to tackle unhealthy eating and a lack of exercising. Acupuncture might also help with the bodies’ aches and pains, so if a joint or muscle pain is preventing you from exercising, acupuncture could alleviate the issue!

Irritable bowel syndrome

Individuals with irregular systems may be looking for treatments which can increase their well-being and reduce symptoms. Irritable bowel syndrome is an intestinal disorder with symptoms ranging from cramping to flatulence, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea and nausea. Many people suffer from IBS whether it be mild or severe, with most cases causing discomfort and embarrassment for the individual suffering. As of yet, there is no cure for IBS, however, Chinese Medicine believes that IBS represents an imbalance between the liver and the spleen. Practitioners believe that if the liver is not working effectively, the digestive system is disrupted, causing IBS symptoms. Practitioners also believe acupuncture can restore the liver and spleen harmony and reduce uncomfortable symptoms. This is not to say that only sufferers from IBS will benefit from acupuncture, anyone wanting to feel more regular and lighter may find it helpful!

Low mood

Low mood is something that affects many people and can often be overlooked and ignored but can lead to a range of unhealthy habits such as binge-eating, excess drinking and smoking. However, instead of suffering in silence it may be worth looking to get an acupuncture treatment. By inserting the needles into a specific point of the body, acupuncture is believed to stimulate the nervous system and cause the release of neurochemical messenger molecules, altering the brain’s mood chemistry and increasing the production of serotonin and endorphins and stimulating neurochemicals dopamine, noradrenaline and cortisol. Acupuncture can, for some, help the release of the hormones that keep our mood high and give us bursts of pleasure. This may be the pick-me-up you need if you are suffering from low mood!

Sleep

Many people do not get the recommended amount of sleep per day. With the increased use of technology, it is getting harder for people to switch off (mind the pun) and relax before going to sleep. Sleep provides vital health benefits such as kerbing inflammation that can be linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and arthritis, it can also help maintain a healthy weight as sleep and metabolism are controlled by the same sectors of the brain. In those who suffer for problematic sleep patterns, often the brain refuses to shut down at night. This causes sleeping problems and decreased energy, leaving the person to feel physically exhausted. Along with help from the patient (such as making an effort to sleep earlier) acupuncture has been shown to relax some individuals and break their sleeping pattern so that they can sleep earlier and for longer.

Headache

Tension-type headaches are very common nowadays with a lot of people sitting at a desk staring at a screen all day. This kind of a headache can be mild but can last hours or come in bursts. Although many people treat headaches with over the counter medication such as paracetamol and ibuprofen, these kinds of medications can become ineffective over a long period of time. If you are someone that suffers from headaches, acupuncture could provide a much-needed health benefit, increasing your overall sense of well-being.

Stress

Up to half a million people in the UK experience work-related stress every year which often results in illness with many people suffering from increased levels of anxiety as a result of stress. Stress can also be responsible for other conditions such as IBS, headache, menopausal symptoms so may be the underlying cause of your health problem. By deactivating the ‘analytic brain’ and stimulating a production of endogenous opioids that effect the autonomic nervous system, acupuncture can activate the parasympathetic nervous system that brings down the body from the sympathetic nervous system or ‘flight or fight’ mode that keeps your body on edge. The increased levels of endorphins and serotonin can increase your mood helping to combat the feeling of stress.

As I mentioned at the start of this article, I’ve personally found acupuncture to be a very successful alternative treatment for back pain which I’ve suffered from for years due to an old dance injury. Although the outcome differs from person to person it’s definitely worth considering if you feel you’re running out of options and don’t want to keep popping the pills. This was my personal area of concern, I knew it wasn’t healthy to be living off Ibuprofen so I knew I had to investigate alternative treatments.

I would also like to note that my acupuncturist is also a fully qualified medical doctor, and is, therefore, able to offer a more informed approach drawing on experience as both a doctor and acupuncturist. I would highly recommend finding a practitioner with similar qualifications to anyone who is struggling with back/joint pain and is considering acupuncture.

As always, please consult your GP or healthcare professional before starting any new alternative medicine or treatment.

What are your thoughts on acupuncture? Have you tried it before, did you have success?

Since your skin is the largest organ, it benefits from this hard-to-penetrate defense put up by your immune system.

Perhaps the best way to strengthen your immune system is to ensure that your body receives all the nutrients it needs. Feeding your body with vitamins and minerals such as Vitamins A, C, and E as well as zinc and omega 3 fatty acids can only make your immune system stronger. You can get these nutrients easily from foods particularly from fruits and vegetables; although between the two, fruits are the richer source of nutrients.

You also need to learn how to control scratching that is an offshoot of eczema symptoms, specifically itchy skin. Scratching aggravates the condition and can lead to serious infections that will make your eczema worse. To control and prevent scratching, the basic thing to do is to maintain good hygiene to keep your skin clean.
