New Survey Reveals Stress is Main Cause of IBS

A new survey conducted by talkhealth1, on behalf of Enteromed, shows that stress, rather than food is the main cause of sufferers’ IBS – with 34% saying stress triggered their IBS. And almost 9 out of 10 (88%) said that their IBS stops them socialising at times. When asked about the effectiveness of the treatments they had tried, 86% said they had provided temporary relief, with only 14% saying they had improved their condition. The aim of this survey was to collect the latest data prior to large-scale clinical research on IBS-D and the effectiveness of Enterosgel in its treatment.

It is estimated that up to one in five people in the UK will develop Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) at some stage in their life. IBS can affect sufferers in various ways, with abdominal pain, bloating and bouts of diarrhoea or constipation the most common symptoms. It can be a source of great discomfort, embarrassment and unhappiness, turning holidays and everyday tasks into a struggle.

The IBS Survey for Enterosgel UK was carried out between Tuesday 4th July and Tuesday 15th August 2017. 568 people participated in the survey with 552 fully completing the survey.

Those who were living with IBS were asked to identify the three symptoms that impact them most on a daily basis: stomach pain and discomfort affected 82% (437 people), bloating (75%) and diarrhoea (64%). Over half of those with IBS had been diagnosed by a GP (57%), with 29% being diagnosed by a hospital specialist, and 14% self-diagnosing their IBS.

Stress and food were the causes that most participants felt triggered their IBS; stress 34% and food 28%. Nearly a quarter of people stated that they didn’t know what causes their IBS (22%).

Sufferers were asked to consider how their IBS affects them, by answering yes or no to a series of statements.88% said that ‘my IBS stops me from socialising at times’. Over three quarters of people felt that their IBS stopped them from being effective at work at times and over half had taken time off work due to their IBS. 67% felt that their IBS affected their relationships at home. And 20% had had symptoms that required them to be admitted to hospital due to their IBS.

Participants were asked what treatments they had already tried prior to completing the survey; antispasmodic medicines (40% – 214 people), and probiotics (20%) were the most commonly used. However, when asked about the effectiveness of these treatments, 86% stated that the treatments provided temporary relief and only 14% said that the treatments they had tried had actually improved their condition.

Enterosgel has been available in Europe for more than 20 years, where no systematic side effects have been reported. It is an innovative drug-free intestinal adsorbent that has been introduced to the UK for IBS sufferers three years ago, as an alternative to medications.

Enterosgel is an organic mineral gel proven to adsorb bacterial toxins including E-Coli and C Difficile2. This breakthrough gut treatment tackles the causes of gastrointestinal disorders. It has been scientifically developed to attach or bind to toxins, allergens, pathogens and viruses in the gut. Gut nasties are gently and effectively expelled from the body, helping towards treatment of diarrhoea, allergies and IBS and protection of the intestinal wall.

This oral suspension is free from gluten, sugar and preservatives. It does not take away beneficial substances and is suitable and safe for long–term use and alongside with other treatments.

David Willson comments, “I’ve been using Enterosgel on and off for most of 2016. There are no side-effects at all. It’s not like Imodium, which I don’t like to use, as I don’t think that you should be holding bad things in your body when your body needs to expel them. Enterosgel helps you get rid of them naturally in a gentle way by taking away the bad things as it travels through the body. And it’s even more effective than the silica gel I took.”

Enterosgel® is available over the counter in pharmacies and health stores in 225g tubes, 90g tubes and a box of 10x15g sachets, retailing from £12.80 at pharmacies and health stores, Boots, Lloyds Pharmacy, Holland & Barrett, DayLewis and Superdrug or on-line at enteromed.co.uk.

Spider Phobias Cause Unwanted Stress

It is of course this time of year where all you see are things spider related and even see the little critters invading your home. Arachnophobia is the worlds biggest fear and causes many people unnecessary stress and anxiety, oddly, many people would rather suffer from the anxiety than get help to rid the phobia and have a much more enjoyable life. Wouldn’t life be so much more enjoyable if you didn’t have to keep looking over your shoulder all the time and especially this time of year?

If you want to see images of people who had a fear of spiders having completed one of my courses, click here – WARNING THERE ARE PICTURES OF TARANTULAS!

From August to October is usually when we see a spider influx and the general stress levels can rise so much and, increased stress can reduce quality of sleep, affect diet and make you worry and panic unnecessarily.

It is completely possible to

  • Eradicate your fear.
  • Feel calmer around spiders.
  • Be in control around spiders.
  • Remove them yourself in a more relaxed way.

It is through my experience that this fear of spiders is about 95% learnt behaviour, by nature we are not afraid of spiders and the fear is mainly passed on through a family member, typically a parent. Do you really want your child to have increased anxiety and panic over spiders?

Why you are experiencing so much discomfort/panic/anxiety toward spiders is because your brain is recalling the first memory you had which gave you the fear. Your brains job is to protect you and keep you alive so be safe knowing that your brain is doing its job well.

For whatever reason your brain has decided that spiders are dangerous, this might be because, as a child, you saw your mum scream at the sight of a spider and from this moment onwards your brain has made the decision that “if mum doesn’t like it, it is no good for me”.

Because of this your unconscious mind will constantly scan for anything that is or could be a spider and when it sees something like a spider it immediately sends out a signal to start the stress response. During ‘spider season’ you are even more on your guard with those stress levels constantly going up and down which, can cause paranoia – when I had arachnophobia, I would constantly check for spiders but now I can relax and not worry, if I see one, its ok, I’ll just grab a glass, a piece of card and take it outside.

Cause, symptoms and treatment of eczema

Eczema There are many different types of eczema; infantile eczema, which babies experience as an allergy that they usually grow out of, atopic dermatitis, which is the more persistent form, and contact dermatitis, a sensitive reaction to touching an allergic substance. Atopic eczema affects 15% of young children and is on the increase. Eczema feels itchy, hot, painful and dry. Moisturising is essential to help this discomfort. Many people find that certain food make their condition worse, and asthma sufferers often can predict an attack through a visible worsening of their skin. Sufferers often feel socially isolated by peoples response to their appearance and hence has many physiological side effects.

Symptoms
Redness, flaking, cracking of the skin, Small red water blisters, Itchy, hot and sore, Repeated scratching leads to thickened wrinkled skin, Sufferers may also have atopic asthma or hay fever

Triggers
– Atopic dermatitis: Inherited tendency, Dust mite droppings, Grass, Pollen, Animals, Feathers, Some foods. br – Irritant Contact Dermatitis: Detergents, soaps, etc, Solvents, industrial chemicals, Repeated contact with water, Preservatives in creams and cosmetics br – Allergic Contact Dermatitis: Nickel, Perfume, Latex

Treatment
Steroid creams, Antibiotics if skin is infected, Chinese herbal medecine, Homeopathy, Sedating antihistamines to aid sleep

Tips for Success
– Avoiding known triggers
– Substitute cows milk for soya for infants with atopic eczema
– Regular application of moisturisers
– Use gentle cleaning products
– Avoid soap, bubble bath and harsh detergents
– Use bath oils and aqueous creams for cleansing
– If sensitive to dust mite allergen, use allergy proof bedding
– Wear non allergic gloves for household cleaning
– Wash all new clothes before wearing, avoid wool, tight clothing and elastic; chose cotton clothes instead.
– Pat or gently slap irritated skin. Do not scratch as this can lead to infection
– Keep fingernails short or put infants in cotton scratch mitts

Researchers confirm that inflammation, histamine, cause anxiety (GAD)

It’s hardly news to us those of us with histamine intolerance and mast cell activation that inflammation can cause symptoms of anxiety. Now though, the research has finally caught up, with scientists identifying altered pro and anti-inflammatory profiles in patients with Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD). One of the inflammatory agents is monitored in the study can also be released by mast cells (which can also trigger histamine).

The study published in Brain, Behavior and Immunity provides the first evidence that Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is associated with an imbalance between interferon (IFN-y), interleukin (IL-10), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-a), which is released by mast cells.

The authors found that patients with GAD had high levels of pro-inflammatory IFN-y and TNF-a, but low levels of the anti-inflammatory IL-10, compared to healthy control subjects. They believe that an impairment of the tryptophan degrading enzyme leads to degradation of serotonin in patients with GAD.

I’ve long researched the link between histamine, mast cells and anxiety and depression.

You can read about the mast cell-depression link here

And how antihistamines can treat schizophrenia here

Now, with histamine researcher Dr. Janice Joneja once said to me, “Well of course the symptoms are all in the head, histamine is a neurotransmitter!”

You can find my interview with this amazing histamine researcher here

Her comment tickled me immensely given the number of times I was admonished for imagining my symptoms and that it was ridiculous to link what I ate, and how my body felt, to my state of mind.

Read my interview with Harvard trained psychiatrist Dr. Georgia Ede for more on the histamine-mood link

Read all about how histamine can generate symptoms of anxiety here

It seems that us members of the “permanently inflamed tribe” have been vindicated in linking flushing, palpitations, anxiety, tunnel vision and (in my case) a sense of doom almost like an asteroid was on a collision course with my reality, to histamine and inflammation generally.

I was first diagnosed with anxiety at about fourteen years old, but really I’d been suffering from it since childhood. My brother once commented (ok, way more than once), that I was the most fearful and stressed child he’d known (he’s sixteen years older than me). While it’s true that I’ve had a very tumultuous life, growing up in a war zone, father dead at 40 or so, changing schools and moving country every six months at times, I don’t consider that I had a particularly traumatic life compared with many people. And yet I was shaking like a leaf most days, filled with a sense that something truly catastrophic was about to befall me or my loved ones. I would wake up in the morning with a sense of dread, wondering what awful thing was going to happen. It was almost a relief when something would happen, and hopefully I could go about the rest of my day just a smidge less fearful than I started it.

But things got out of hand at university. Within just a few short years I was diagnosed with GAD, bipolar and unipolar depression, borderline personality and was medicated with pretty much everything on the market, for years. Changing my diet allowed me to come off all psychiatric medications (including daily Xanax/benzodiazepines), within a matter of months, but I was still a mess histamine-wise, till I totally overhauled my life.

You can learn how I transitioned from eating a handful of foods to eating a normal diet here (nutrient dense and from scratch is normal to me!).

Nowadays it takes a major life event to properly phase me. What I’m still not great at is dealing with daily anxiety due to a situation beyond my control, like when my mother fell ill last year and I spent a year flying back and forth to a country on another continent.

But I do my best. The meditation and exercise are a huge help, as is knowing that I may be on edge simply because my histamine level might be elevated. And yes, it does still happen to me. Because like you, I’m human, and I’m constantly pushing the boundaries to see what I can get away with.

It’s finally here! Man Food – a high nutrient antihistamine and anti-inflammatory ingredient filled book geared towards guys, women who love to work out, yoga like they mean it, or just load up on healing nutrients. Features my personal shopping list of antihistamine and anti-inflammatory foods.

Could An Allergy ‘Cause’ An Eating Disorder?

People who grow up with food allergies typically have a different relationship to food than those who grow up allergy-free. While this by no means indicates that an eating disorder will naturally develop (far from it!), it is worth noting that someone who has experienced a frequent adverse reaction after eating will typically think a bit more about what they put into their mouths than those who have not. To the casual observer, such ‘finickiness’ may look like a disordered eating pattern, when in fact it is simple self-preservation. Being aware of what is and what is not good for you is far from an eating disorder. An allergy is a physical reaction, in which the body itself rejects a substance it deems to be harmful. An eating disorder is a mental health condition, in which the subject develops a mentally pathological relationship with food. The former tends to be related to internal physiology, the later to psychology (body image tends to play a large part in the development of eating disorders – not feelings of physical illness following eating). In general, the two are mutually exclusive. In certain circumstances, it is not inconceivable that bad experiences with food as a child may lead to disordered eating as one grows older – meaning that people with serious food allergies may in some cases be vulnerable to eating disorders – but in general the causal mechanisms behind each are entirely separate.

‘Allergies’ As An Excuse For Disordered Eating

Perhaps more problematically, some people who have a psychologically difficult relationship with food may convince themselves that they are allergic to certain foods, or even (more deceptively) use ‘allergies’ as an excuse to exert extreme control over their food intake. It’s easier to tell someone that you’re allergic to the meal they’ve cooked than to refuse it on the grounds that you no longer like to eat at all. Some eating disorder survivors have come forward and stated outright that they either used faux allergies as a ‘veil’ behind which they could effectively hide their eating disorder, or adopted diets recommended for people with allergies in order to lose weight and control their diets to an obsessive degree. While these kinds of tactics do, to some people, appear to support the view that food allergies are pathological rather than physical, those who use these tactics should not be blamed for doing so. They are, after all, mentally ill, and often struggling to manage their conditions in an incomprehending (and often enabling) society.

‘Clean Eating’, Allergies, And Disorders – A Very Gray Area…

In the centre of the allergies/dietary control/eating disorders venn diagram is Orthorexia Nervosa. This is a condition which involves people becoming so obsessed with ‘clean eating’ that they develop serious complications, often akin to those found with anorexia, but with a slightly different mental cause. Rather than obsessing about losing weight (although this may be one aspect of the condition), orthorexics become so fixated upon ‘clean eating’ (which can be a very good thing if not taken to unhealthy extremes!) that they cut out many essential food groups and restrict their diets to an inordinate degree. Sometimes, these people may convince themselves that they are allergic to certain food groups, when the truth is in fact nothing of the kind. Again, orthorexics are not to be blamed for their faux allergies -they do, after all, genuinely believe that they are allergic to these things. Rather than playing the ‘I’m more allergic than you’ game, we can perhaps instead reduce the preponderance of ‘allergies’ in eating disorder sufferers by making it clear just how un-glamorous and nasty allergies really are. By telling the truth of allergies, we can perhaps make it clear that what an orthorexic THINKS is an allergy may simply be a psychological method of dietary control – and thus help them to gain a better perspective of their motivations for eating in the way that they do.

Special thanks to Helen Hilton for this guest blog.

Ed: I have just this week heard of the term ‘Orthorexic’, just days before this guest blog came into my inbox. It’s something I will be looking into more over the coming weeks and month as it really intrigues me.

I can state for a fact that allergies are not all in MY mind. I will have an allergic reaction to the foods I am allergic to even when I am unsuspecting that I’ve consumed them. It’s instant. It is my body reacting. However, if I am having trouble with the my skin or experiencing repeated unexplained reactions or even known explained reactions… I become very wary of food. In fact my appetite almost disappears. This can last for days, sometimes weeks, which is not normal for me. I love food and have a a healthy appetite. But what part is the mind playing for many of us? Do some of my milder reactions have more to do with my mind being in control? or is there a real reaction taking place?

A fascinating subject and I’d love to hear your reactions and thoughts on this.
