The next fundraising challenge for SIX TIMES OPEN

Three Peaks Challenge
SIX TIMES OPEN, a fundraising campaign led by fraternal twins, Jonathan and David Stretton-Downes, have been working hard to reach their goal of raising £100,000 in one year for the British Heart Foundation’s research into heart disease. They have taken on some weird and wacky challenges, but their latest challenge is guaranteed to blow the rest out of the water.

On April 7th, a select group of SIX TIMES OPEN challengers will be taking part in the Three Peaks Challenge – which will see them climbing the 3 highest peaks in Wales, Scotland and England, in under 24 hours. The challenger group is made up on men and women who have a personal connection to heart disease. If that wasn’t enough, they will also be getting their heads shaved at the highest point on Ben Nevis, a hair-raising 4412ft high.

Their hair-brained scheme is being supported by award winning hairdressers, Jones and Payne, who will be joining the SIX TIMES OPEN challengers on their trek up Ben Nevis.

The SIX TIMES OPEN campaign began in November 2016, while Jonathan was awaiting his sixth heart surgery. Since then, the brothers have raised a staggering £25,000 for the British Heart Foundation, which has gone into lifesaving research on heart disease.

The team are aiming to raise a further £3,000 in donations, taking their fundraising efforts to around £30,000. This isn’t all SIX TIMES OPEN has planned in, you can take a look at further fundraising events below:

6-7th April 2018 – 3 Peaks Challenge
18th May 2018 – The TICKER BALL – SAVOY
20th May 2018 – The TENPAST Challenge Cup – Charity Football Match at the Stadium of Light

Is back to school shopping looking to challenge Christmas?

We had a record breaking year last year for back to school sales; with over 800 billion[1] spent in the US, the back-to-school shopping season accounted for 17% of retail sales for the year. That was both plugged and un-plugged[2]. The experts say we are going to spend even more this year. It breaks down like this; we will spend what we did last year plus about 4% more. That is a whole lot of preparation for education. Continue reading

The challenge of coping with osteoarthritis in the workplace

Half of all adults in the UK will develop Osteoarthritis, 1 in 2 will develop osteoarthritis (OA) in their knees while 1 in 4 will develop it in their hips and 1 in 12 will develop it in their hands.

Osteoarthritis affects many people, particularly those who carry out the same physical task in their jobs time and time again.

That said, the bottom line is that work is good for you, research shows that employment boosts confidence and improves mobility however people with moderate to severe osteoarthritis encounter challenges in the work place.

What are the challenges faced?

These challenges are often associated with unhealthy postures and extreme loads, many jobs require you to perform tasks in the workplace frequently and with repetitive movements i.e. squatting or kneeling, bent over again and again or exert a large force, others are constantly on their feet, have to lift heavy loads or constantly perform the same movements, for example:

  • Retail
  • Painters
  • Waiters
  • Healthcare Professionals
  • Construction Workers
  • Carpenters
  • Gardeners
  • Manufacturing Workers

Therefore, it is probable over time that various joints of the body will be overloaded, causing cartilage damage or other problems.

Think about low impact sports

Suffering from osteoarthritis should not stop you from being active as it is important to keep your joints functioning for as long as possible (not to mention the release of endorphins when exercising which act as natural painkillers).

You can try to incorporate moderate sports or activities and slowly build this into your routine. It can also compensate for any one-sided movements in your job and help to keep the joint cartilage lubricated and supplied with nutrients.

The sports and activities you choose however should not place unnecessary strain on the joints, such as:

  • Swimming
  • Cycling
  • Gymnastics
  • Walking
  • Tai Chi
  • Yoga
  • Aqua Jogging

As with every other activity you shouldn’t work through the pain but start in a pain-free / low pain period. Working through the pain can have a negative effect and exacerbate the situation.

There are a number of other options available to help you manage your knee pain, check out our treatment overview.

What if you have advanced OA?

If the osteoarthritis is already more advanced so that you can no longer able to carry on with your profession, it is important that you discuss this with somebody in your work place, this could be your line manager or someone in human resources, once you have told them about your health issues they are obliged to take them seriously, topics to discuss with your employer could include:

  • Reduced Hours
  • Flexi Time
  • Job Share
  • Occupational Health
  • Retraining
  • Physiotherapy

Retraining could be a solution and something to consider, any job or career that you could retrain for or a career where you can transfer your skills but without the stress of too much physical loading and/or repetitive loading of your joints.

What should I do?

Visit the doctor early with joint problems, 8.75 million people in the UK have sought treatment for osteoarthritis, of these 4.7 million people in the UK have sought treatment for osteoarthritis of the knee.

Osteoarthritis is difficult to diagnose early on, because it evolves insidiously and unnoticed in the beginning one of the first signs which patients notice is the typical start-up pain including: Getting started after a period of rest which leads to a slight pain or a feeling of tightness in the knee, the hip or some other joint.

  • Getting out of bed in the morning
  • Getting out of the car after a long journey
  • Stiffness after a repetitive task i.e. gardening, cleaning

Many people dismiss this by simply accepting that it can take a while after a period of rest, to get the joints moving again because the pain goes away, but the pain always returns and gradually over time worsens.

Don’t dismiss the stiffness

It does not make sense to dismiss the stiffness and pain in your joints and to keep suffering, you should go to the doctor at the first sign of any regular pains and stiffness.

Even though osteoarthritis cannot be cured, the disease process and the maintenance of mobility can mostly be influenced by a positive and consistent treatment plan.

The treatment is normally based on several areas, which can be split into:

The earlier you start, the greater the chance of keeping your joints functional and help slow down the progression of osteoarthritis.

Vitamin C Skin Care The Challenge

Vitamin C is often regarded as a wrinkle fighter or an anti-aging agent. The main objective of ‘Vitamin C skin care’, in scientific terms, is to increase the synthesis of collagen (a structural protein that is found in skin). The additional benefit of ‘Vitamin C skin care’ is related to its capability of countering free radicals which cause damage to the skin.

Vitamin C skin care, however, faces a major challenge today. This is related to the oxidation tendency of Vitamin C skin care products. On coming in contact with any oxidising agent (e.g. air), the Vitamin C in the Vitamin C skin care products, gets oxidised; thus making the Vitamin C skin care product useless (in fact counter-effective). The oxidised Vitamin C imparts a yellowish-brown colour to the Vitamin C skin care product. This is something that you need to check before buying a Vitamin C skin care product. Even after you buy a Vitamin C skin care product, you need to store it properly and keep checking that it’s still good to use (i.e. it hasn’t attained a yellowish-brown texture).

The manufacturers of Vitamin C skin care products have tried to deal with this (oxidation) problem in multiple ways (and research on Vitamin C skin care products is on the top of their list). One such method of retaining effectiveness of Vitamin C skin care products for a long term is to keep a high concentration (say 10%) of Vitamin C. However, this makes the Vitamin C skin care products even more expensive. The Vitamin C skin care products are already pretty inexpensive and making them even more expensive will throw the product manufacturers out of business. The other way is to use Vitamin C derivatives (like ascorbyl palmitate and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate). These are not only more stable but also inexpensive. Even though the derivatives based products are not as effective as the Vitamin C skin care products, their stability against oxidation is a very desirable feature that makes them very attractive. Moreover, these are known to be less irritating too.

Talking of effectiveness of Vitamin C skin care products, it’s important to mention that not everyone responds to Vitamin C treatments. So it’s not a magic potion in any way. If you don’t see a noticeable difference in your skin, it might be because of your skin not responding to Vitamin C treatment (and the Vitamin C skin care products might not be at fault, at all).

As more research goes on, one can only keep our fingers crossed and wait for a complete solution to the challenges faced by ‘Vitamin C skin care’ today.
