Online Clinic for Bladder Issues

In support of World Continence Week, talkhealth hosted an Online Clinic for bladder issues, which ran from 4-15 June, giving our community the opportunity to get their bladder related questions answered by expert medical professionals.

Questions & Answers

Most people will suffer from a bladder related problem at some time in their life such as urinary incontinence, overactive bladder and infections. These topics were all covered in the Online Clinic with patients asking a wide range of questions – you can view some of the questions and responses below:

    Wpoohema asked: I am 47 and seem to have occasional issues holding my bladder. I am menopausal & have wet the bed thinking I was dreaming it but actually wasn’t. I find it very hard to sleep anyway as constantly hot flushes & very restless.
    Our expert, Mr Sachin Malde answered: Urinary incontinence can worsen around the time of the menopause and this may be why you are suffering from these symptoms right now. Do you also have difficulties holding your bladder during the day? Reducing caffeine can often help, and practising bladder training will help you gain better control of your bladder in the long-term. If your GP has checked your urine for signs of infection and this is all normal, then you could also try a medication to see if it helps and applying an oestrogen cream to the vagina may also help.     Mayarose asked: I recently read an article that our bladder can hold up to 500ml urine so women should not go frequently to the bathroom and try to train their bladder to hold for longer time so they won’t be uncomfortable while going out. I would like to know that if this is the case then why sometimes I feel strong urge to go to loo even though I release very little amount when urinating. Have I got weak bladder?
    Our expert, Mr Benjamin Challacombe answered: Although the actual bladder capacity is usually around 500mls, the functional capacity may be much less if the bladder is overly sensitive or overactive.
    Needing to void small amounts is a symptom of an irritable bladder. Sometimes just being dehydrated and having concentrated urine can trigger this.
    Make sure you drink plenty of water, avoid caffeine and alcohol mainly and try some bladder training drills.
    Lindac01 asked: I’m continually plagued by UTI’s. If I’m lucky I will get a couple of weeks without then another one comes along and so it goes on and on. I’m at my wits end with these and was wondering what you thought.
    Our expert, Mr Sachin Malde answered: Recurrent UTIs are very common, and if this has been going on for a long time then I would recommend seeing a Urologist to do some basic tests to make sure there is no underlying reason for you to keep developing infections. After this, there are a number of ways to improve things for you, including options that don’t involve you having to use so many antibiotics. I hope this helps.

Mar 30, Female Eczema Sufferers Suffer Confidence Issues

An article on Female First has reported that a survey has revealed that the majority of women are embarrassed by their eczema. The study shows that around 75% of women sufferers feel embarrassed or unattractive by their eczema. When I was younger I was very self conscious of my eczema. I always kept it covered as much as I could. As I have got older, especially in the last 10 years, I am definitely not as worried about it. The 2 main reasons for that is that I am much better at managing and treating it now. And also that I am just more confident in general. It was important for me to accept my eczema as part of me. It doesn’t matter if you are male or female, or how old you are, if you have eczema, you may feel self conscious of your skin. It is so important if your child has eczema to try not to impress any negative feelings about their eczema, on them. In the future I plan to write some pages about the impact that eczema can have on you, and your child’s life. Including the psychological aspects, and ways you can deal with situations at work and school. I will keep you up to date on here, and let you know of any new pages added to the site. Parents – Issues You May Face When Your Child Has Eczema

If your child was recently diagnosed with eczema, also commonly known as atopic dermatitis, you have a long road ahead. Although eczema is easily treated at home, there are many hard issues that you, as a parent, will face.

Nighttime Itching

You might assume that nighttime itching is the same as daytime itching for children with eczema, but it can be very different, especially in small children. Although they do not fully understand the complications that can arise from constant scratching, children are aware of their actions during the day. On the other hand, many small children continue to scratch in the middle of the night, without even being aware of their actions. This type of eczema is difficult to treat, as you cannot spend every night grabbing your child’s arm before they itch.

To combat the nighttime itching that is common among children with eczema, look for doable alternatives. If dust is a trigger factor, keep your child’s room clean and dust-free. If sweat is a trigger factor, dress them in light clothes and keep their room a cool temperature. If you don’t know the cause, try to keep areas susceptible to itching, such as the arms and legs, covered.

Pain

An eczema outbreak starts out relatively pain free. It typically begins with a simple itch that can’t stop. Soon, your child may find themselves literally digging at their skin. They mistakenly believe this will make the itch go away, but it doesn’t and it only gets worse. Severe rashes and the open wounds caused by constant scratching can lead to pain and discomfort. No parent wants to see their child in pain. That is why you must stop it at the source. Work with your child and his or her doctor to determine your child’s trigger factors. These are what cause the uncontrollable urge to itch. In the meantime, keep your child’s skin well moisturized.

Concern from Other Parents

Although eczema and atopic dermatitis are common among small children, you are likely to get many stares on the playground. This is most common if your child’s eczema rashes can be seen by other parents. Although you should keep your child’s open wounds covered to prevent infection, don’t just cover them to please others.

“Is eczema contagious?” That is a common question that many parents may ask. Unfortunately, some parents don’t even ask, they may automatically assume it is. You and your child owe no one an explication, as eczema is nothing but an inflammation of the skin. However, you may want to spread the word. As heartbreaking as it is to see other parents and kids point out your child’s eczema rash, it is a normal reaction that most don’t know how to avoid.

These are just a few of the issues you may face as the parent of a child with eczema. Since your child is young and does not fully understand their skin condition, you must work with them to seek relief.
