Persistence saved my life, it could save yours too

Losing weight, diarrhoea and loss of appetite are symptoms associated with a number of common health issues, and may not cause alarm for many but did for me when I suddenly started experiencing them in the summer of 2007. After several visits to the GP, I was told that I had Irritable Bowel Syndrome – but that diagnosis wasn’t good enough for me.

I pestered my GP to refer me to a specialist after I was prescribed painkillers that didn’t ease the mid-back pain that I was experiencing. But when the pain shifted round to my ribcage, I fast-tracked myself, with the help of a locum GP and my husband’s private medical insurance, to a specialist who arranged for me to have a scan.

This saved my life. I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which was absolutely devastating, but I was very lucky to be diagnosed early enough to have surgery that would increase my chances of surviving the disease. Life-saving treatment may not have been an option if my scan was delayed to the following week but here I am, 10 years on.

Pancreatic cancer is so aggressive that early diagnosis and treatment are essential. Yet very few people are aware of the signs and risks so early detection is extremely uncommon. I was stunned to hear that for nearly my entire lifetime, treatment options and diagnostic tools have remained relatively unchanged.

More than 90% of the population knows little to nothing about pancreatic cancer and its symptoms. I was one of those people. I hadn’t even heard about it until the consultant surgeon sat me down on August 30, 2007 to tell me I had a tumour in the body of my pancreas, and that I needed surgery as soon as possible. It seemed impossible to all of us. I was 41 and otherwise healthy. I didn’t smoke. I drank in moderation. I was not a candidate for pancreatic cancer and the diagnosis wasn’t even considered by any general practitioner I saw.

It wasn’t until after the surgery – which removed my spleen, part of my pancreas and affected lymph nodes – that I understood that only one in 10 patients with this diagnosis can be operated on at all. Even fewer survive the first five years.

A slow diagnosis delays patient’ referrals to the right specialists, which is crucial. I would advise anyone with symptoms not normal for them to be persistent. The speed of my diagnosis meant it was still possible to remove the tumour followed by chemotherapy.

I have made it my mission to help others survive. I founded Pancreatic Cancer Action to ensure more are diagnosed sooner by raising awareness of the disease, funding research into early diagnosis, and pushing for greater investment into research, to discover more treatment options for those who are diagnosed.

How to Cope with What Life Sends Your Way

Stress is a part of life. Sometimes the stress that comes out of each situation is good and sometimes it’s bad. For instance, achieving a goal can become stressful but once you reach it you feel a sense of accomplishment, that’s good stress. Raising a family and trying to keep everyone in order and a home functioning properly can overwhelm you and make you tired, that’s bad stress. In order to keep stress from causing you harm it’s important to learn how to deal with the bad stress in a positive way.

Stress and your health

Stress can cause you to break down, feel anxious and lose sleep. It can also cause you to indulge in alcohol or drugs as a way of coping. The problem is that a once a day drink or pill to relax can quickly turn into a dependency that increases slowly to a level that’s harmful and even life threatening. If you come home from work and look for your drink or drugs upon entering you may very well have a serious addiction. Luckily there are places like BLVD Hollywood detox, where you can get the help you need to make a full recovery.

Pinpointing the source of your stress

Sometimes you put yourself directly in front of a course that’s destined for a collision without even realizing it. It may be your job that stays on your mind long after your day finishes. Or, perhaps, it’s your inability to say no to a favor that tacks more on your to-do list than is humanly possible. In order to remove the bad stress or at the very least reduce it, you need to find out from where it where it derives.

Positive ways to handle your stress

If you are the do-all in your family and on the job, it’s in your best interest to learn to say no and delegate the responsibilities to others. For instance, if you spend your entire evening checking homework, running baths, cooking and doing laundry, give up some of the responsibilities. No one person can do it all and by allowing others to help with the chores you’re making them responsible and you’re giving you well-deserved down time. The same goes for the office, stop handling everything and micromanaging. It’s time to trust others to complete tasks. In the beginning, this will seem difficult, but once you release some of the responsibility off your shoulders you’ll feel better.

Say what’s on your mind

Stress comes from various sources and one may be that you hold everything inside. This is not good for you or those you love. Releasing things that bother you lets others know how you feel and it gets it out of your system. It’s OK to express your thoughts and become assertive.

Ways to reduce stress

If you feel tense and out of control release your thoughts through an activity. Exercise is a great way to remove the stress from your body. When you work up a sweat feel good hormones called endorphins. After your workout, they make you happy, energized and leave you feeling refreshed. Find some form of physical activity you enjoy like aerobics, a brisk walk or jog, tennis or swimming. In addition to including exercise sessions a few times a week, learn to take time out for the ones you love. The connection with family and good friends puts you in a safe zone where you can mentally relax and unwind. Go to the park, take a day trip or get together for a lunch.

Find me time

Everyone needs time for them. You are not superhuman and have needs the same as the next person. Without having any time set aside for you, you can subconsciously feel resentment. Instead, take up a hobby, go out shopping alone, or enjoy your favourite movie uninterrupted. You’ll feel better and those around you will get to enjoy a relaxed version of you.

Stress can cause you to acquire bad habits, lose sleep and eventually lead to a mental breakdown. Learn how to relax and avoid the people or situations that bring on bad stress.

The Cat Flea Life Cycle

The flea is one of the most common parasites to infect dogs and cats. This can lead to excessive itching, scratching and even blood loss. Since fleas feed on blood, a severe infection can leave your pet anemic. Also in some cases, pets can develop allergies to flea saliva which results in a severe dermatitis.

The adult flea is only about 2.5 mm in length and is usually dark brown, but can be seen by the naked human eye. They don’t have wings but they can jump a great distance.

In order to effectively control fleas in your house you should understand a little bit about their life cycle. The adult flea can live up to 115 days on the dog, but only a few days off of the dog because they need to constantly feed.

Normally after the fleas take in a blood meal they will mate on the skin of the dog and then the female will lay the eggs within 48 hours.

Females can produce up to 2000 eggs in a four month life cycle. As the female lays the eggs they fall off the dog and usually onto the furniture or carpet.

It takes about 10 days for the eggs to hatch into larvae form. The larvae feed on debris found on the carpet. The larvae then go into a pupal stage that can last anywhere from a few days to a few months.

How fast fleas mature through the life cycle depends greatly on temperature and humidity conditions. If these temperatures are optimal for fleas the flea life cycle can be very quick.

After they emerge from the pupil stage they have only two weeks to find a host before they die.

Remember, at any time only 1% of the population is composed of adults. 99% of the time they are in other stages like egg, larval, or pupal stages, and are not visible to the human eye.

A Day in the Life of a Drink Coaster

The coaster sits in a set, atop and below its fellow mates, or side by side, nestled away somewhere hidden and innocuous. Nobody notices them, and if they do, its with a hint of disdain, at the functional piece of pretension, which is just one more way the host can control the environment around you.

Then there are guests, friends, family it doesn’t really matter. They shuffle around. They sit they stand. They chat quietly with one another, waiting, but nobody really knows what for.

And then the kitchen door opens and there is the host with a tray laden with the finest beverages. Juices, sodas, seltzers and more, every refreshing treat that you can sip through a straw, all at the bequest of the patient guests.

But the coasters know what’s coming. They almost shiver with anticipation at the coming of their usefulness. As the glasses of cold and hot liquid are handed out, the host remembers, that beautiful table top, the arm of the couch, these surfaces are vulnerable to sills, heat and condensation. Suddenly, the coasters aren’t so innocuous anymore.

And so the host grabs up the coasters, distributing them along with the cups, placing them as the one thin barrier between the perfection of their home, and the unsightly stains that are sure to arise otherwise.

As the coasters spread throughout the space, they lend their colors to the room, taking on a prominence that is bellied by their diminutive stature. They are suddenly a net of color, a wide spread tapestry of tone that spreads across the space in subtle but noticeable patterns.

Now they are the center of attention, or at least the center of the periphery, as people are forced to attend to them, forced to notice them every time they lift their glass, every time they set it to land back on the pad. They are suddenly an interactive and important part of the experience.

Then afterwards, after drinks are done and conversation has dwindled, it is time to wipe them down, gently, ore sometimes even to toss them out. They’re use spent they are stored away wherever they go, forgotten once more, at the end of their functionality, essentially relegated to obscurity.

And yet these stalwart coasters remain ever ready, teeming at the bit, awaiting that not so far off day when they will be called back to the service of mankind, in the defense of perfection.

This fanciful article was penned by Jim Slate on behalf of PebbleZ.com – manufacturers of a patient, dedicated, and highly elegant line of natural stone drink coasters. Their collection includes a huge selection of natural slate, marble, onyx, fossil, and gemstone beverage coasters, as well as a wide variety of natural stone home accessories and decorative products.

Let the sun shine into your life with the vital vitamin D

After I broke my shoulder in an accident three years ago, my GP suggested a DEXA scan to measure bone density for osteoporosis. I was not surprised, at the age of 70 and more than 20 years after suffering from ulcerative colitis (an auto-immune disease), to be found positive. Evidently, other common conditions tied to osteoporosis are diabetes, breast cancer and Crohn’s Disease, among others.

By chance, a few days after my scan, I read an article by Oliver Gillie, a renowned writer and scientist, about vitamin D deficiency and how it could prevent “modern” diseases such as Crohn’s and UC. I decided to find out more.

As far as I can understand, two of the hallmarks of thinning of the bones are lack of calcium and particularly of vitamin D. But apart from normal growth and strengthening bones and teeth, vitamin D is also essential for improving the health of your intestines. It reduces inflammation, protects the lining and prevents harmful bacteria from entering the blood stream. Vitamin D deficiency is routinely found in patients with IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) as UC blocks its absorption.

Since the 1930s, and especially in the last 20 years, Crohn’s and UC have been increasingly recorded in developed countries. So far, 18 auto-immune diseases (including 11 identified in a study published in BMC Medicine, Oxford, in 2013) have been associated with low levels of this key vitamin. **

Public Health England has recently published data that pointed out that more than one in five people has below the accepted levels of vitamin D. According to Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer, in her report of 2013, as many as 40% of young children are vitamin D deficient. She is “profoundly ashamed” to see the return of rickets in children, blamed on low levels of this vitamin. During World War II the government prescribed cod liver oil, one of the natural sources of vitamin D to all children. Since then, free supplies have gradually been restricted to a small percentage of pregnant and breast-feeding women and under-fives who are on state benefits. Mr Gillie believes that a great advance could be made by providing all pregnant women and babies with free vitamin D supplements.

I was interested to learn that vitamin D takes two to three months to get into general circulation of the body. So babies born in October/November have a higher level during the final months in the womb. As a March baby, after the English winter, I was more at risk.

So how do you get vitamin D into your body? Diet provides only 5-10% of our needs. The remainder comes from exposure to the sun – but advice from the cancer charities in particular has made us worried about sunbathing. Over the last few years reduced exposure to UVB rays (the part of sunlight that promotes vitamin D) together with a more indoor lifestyle has lowered people’s levels. The National Osteoporosis Society maintains that 15 to 20 minutes of sunlight per day on the face and arms during the summer months enables the body to store enough vitamin D to last the rest of the year. Recent guidelines suggest up to 20 minutes around midday, wearing little clothing and no sun screen, is the way to go. After all, it is sunburn itself that is dangerous.

If you can’t get out in the sun (or, typically, if the weather is too bad) vitamin D supplements can raise your levels and reduce symptoms of IBD. Mr Gillie has written about clinical trials that show that patients with Crohn’s Disease may do better or have fewer relapses when they take vitamin D supplements, so long as the condition is not too advanced. Another study at Massachusetts General Hospital, USA, described in the journal Inflammatory Bowel Disease in 2013, demonstrated that the risk of surgery was reduced in Crohn’s patients who took a supplement that increased their blood level to normal.

I had always thought of vitamin D as just the sunshine vitamin that helped bones and teeth. Now I know that its impact and effectiveness is much, much more. Have you had your sunshine ration today?

** Other auto-immune diseases that can be affected by inadequate levels of vitamin D include food Allergies, Asthma, Autism, some types of Cancer, type 1 Diabetes, Lupus, MS, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Schizophrenia.

The article by Sandy originally appeared in the IA Journal (The Ileostomy & Internal Pouch Support Group) Issue 225 Autumn 2014.

Managing Your Life With Skin Problems From Dermatitis

Eczema is one skin condition that can be very difficult to figure out and master. Given this fact you will most likely try several treatments some which will work and some which will not. It is trial and error so don’t give up. It is important to keep track of the treatments that seem to be working both to reduce redness as well as for itching purposes. Try to test just one or two variables at a time to measure this.

The first thing on anyone’s mind with dermatitis is how to minimize or eliminate itching. The secret here involves moisturizing. Dry skin can be a huge trigger for eczema flare-ups. It is best if you apply thick non-scented lotion for sensitive skin directly after showering. This helps lock in the moisture and prevent scaling and peeling. Don’t just do this once a day but continue applying the lotion throughout the day. When your skin is hydrated, the inclination to scratch it is reduced.

A great option for someone who needs immediate relief is taking an antihistamine. These antihistamines will help make the allergic reaction your skin is having less intense and give you the ability to sleep without discomfort. People have found antihistamines helpful for red ant bites and very intense itching scenarios. Do not use a night version of an antihistamine during the day as that will impeded your ability to concentrate at school or work efficiently at the office.

Some moisturizers that people find helpful include aquaphor, vaseline, coconut oils and products containing aloe vera as well as tea tree oil. Check for any allergies and be sure to read labels for additives you have problems with such as nuts or dairy ingredients. Your dermatologist may ask you to use a steroid cream topically twice a day as well to help skin irritations and bumps.

Study both your environment and your diet closely. There may be hidden factors at play that are making your skin aggravated. Call cousins you may have lost touch with to see if they have had similar skin issues. Sometimes there is a genetic thread that can be uncovered and you can share their discoveries. Do not give up or feel it is hopeless. As you identify triggers you will heal the skin and be less troubled by this condition. Do not feel you have to stay at home as your condition is not contagious. Explain to people at work or school the situation so there are not any unnecessary social pressures or moments of awkwardness.
