Why You Should Choose Organic Cotton Clothing for Kids With Eczema & Sensitive Skin

Another great post from itchylittleworld.com – Natural remedies for eczema to soothe your itchy little world..

By Laura Dolgy (see bio below)

Recently, we shared a few thoughts on both latex hypersensitivity and polyester allergies in our blog post Your Guide To Textile Dermatitis as fabric and clothing sensitivities are becoming more prominent among the eczema community.

We’d like to continue sharing some fabric alternatives for kids with eczema, textile dermatitis and sensitive skin. We tend to lean towards organic cotton clothing for kids (and adults too!), as it is completely chemical free and only contains cotton, which happens to be one of the few fabrics that isn’t known to irritate the skin in any way. This certainly lessens the worry of possible flare-ups.

Ready to learn more about organic cotton clothing for kids? Check out why you should adopt this safe fabric alternative for kids with eczema and sensitive skin!

Please keep in mind that although these tips and information have worked for several eczema sufferers, I am in no way a medical professional. If you’re experiencing severe eczema or have a topical infection, it is always best to seek medical advice immediately.

What is 100% Organic Cotton?

Before going into why 100% organic cotton is an excellent alternative for your child’s eczema, let’s take a look at how this fabric is made!

Organic cotton is grown using methods and tools that have a low impact on the environment. This means that the cotton is grown without the use of toxic pesticides or synthetic fertilizers.

This type of fabric is quickly becoming the focal point of a new type of fashion known as “sustainable fashion.” Essentially, it is a growing sustainable movement that is meant to be a direct alternative to fast fashion.

Don’t be fooled by the term organic, which isn’t well regulated. Companies can claim their products are organic when they really aren’t. To make sure an item is organic and free of harmful chemicals look for things like these certifications.

STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® – an independent lab testing fabrics for chemicals.

Why Choose 100% Organic Cotton Clothing for Kids With Eczema?

Because organic cotton does not use any toxic pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, it is by far the most natural, harmless fiber. Some conventional cotton can actually irritate children’s skin (especially newborns) due the chemicals used in processing and packaging. And most conventional cotton contains genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the debate is out one whether GMOs are safe. Read more in GMOs And Your Health: What Is The Connection?

The bottom line is that kids organic clothing in cotton is safe from washes, bleaches, toxic colors or scents and has less of a chance of irritating your child’s skin, especially when they suffer from eczema.

Where Can You Find Kids Organic Clothing in Cotton?

There are several manufacturers that have begun to manufacture organic cotton clothing. For children who suffer from eczema, The Eczema Company is a great store (and resource!). The Eczema Company sells a variety of organic kids pajamas as well as underwear that are made for sensitive skin and do not use any harsh chemicals or dyes. In 100% organic cotton, there is the One-Piece Footed Pajama for Kids, which is the perfect overnight sleepsuit that will allow any damaged or sensitive skin to heal, while providing a restful night’s sleep.

Then there are the Scratch Mittens Pajama Top for Kids, as well as the Footed Pajama Pants for Kids in the same material, great for when you need only a top or bottom or for when your child prefers separates over a one-piece. Similarly to the one-piece footed pajama mentioned above, these organic kids pajamas are a wonderful alternative to skin conditions either present on your child’s arm or legs. Honestly, these organic cotton pajamas are a lifesaver for any child who is continuously scratching from their skin condition. All kids organic pajamas listed here are also latex-free, which is an added bonus for anyone who suffers from a latex allergy.

Finally, these Girl’s Underwear for Sensitive Skin, as well as Boy’s Latex Free Underwear for Sensitive Skin are also 100% organic cotton and perfect for any child who might be suffering from a skin condition or eczema in their groin area. The underwear is also 100% spandex and latex free, which means no flare-ups!

For everything else – school clothes, dresses, tops, bottoms, etc, check out Colored Organics, which offers a full line of babies to big kids certified organic cotton clothing. It’s all super cute and stylish as well!

Although we love 100% organic cotton because it’s a great alternative for eczema sufferers (especially children), we also love it because of its sustainability. Knowing that you’re able to help your child, as well as the environment is a great feeling!

If you’ve been testing out 100% organic cotton clothing on your child, we want to hear from you! Let us know your results in the comments below.

How to Choose the Best Treatment for Eczema By Skin Type

By Laura Dolgy (see bio below)

If you didn’t already know, eczema comes in many different forms. Although eczema is known for being itchy and dry, it is also known for causing sores, welts, redness, and scaly skin. If you’ve been frantically searching the web looking to classify your type of eczema and find the best treatment for it, but have been unsuccessful, you’ll want to read this post! In it we breakdown the most common forms of eczema, as well as the best natural treatment for eczema by type.

Please keep in mind that although these treatments can relieve eczema, we are in no way medical professionals. If you’re experiencing severe eczema symptoms like fever or an infection, it is best to seek medical advice immediately.

Types of Eczema – which form of eczema do you have?

1. Itchy/Red/Dry Eczema

This is probably one of the most common forms of eczema. If you find yourself with patches of chronically itchy, dry eczema on your hands, neck, face or legs then you know all too well how irritating and embarrassing this type of eczema can be. Not to mention that relentless scratching!

The best type of treatment for this eczema type is both healing balms and creams to penetrate and successfully moisturize the skin. One of our favorites is Organic Manuka Skin Soothing Cream which is thick in texture and rich in emollients, making it an excellent treatment for eczema due to its soothing and calming nature. For facial eczema that is red, dry or itchy, you can opt for a spray (for easier application) that contains soothing ingredients like honey, calendula oil or aloe. This Organic Aloe Vera Skin Soothing Spray helps beat the itch with its cooling properties without being greasy.

2. Red/Weeping Eczema

Although many eczema sufferers are burdened with the more common itchy and red skin, others experience red and oozing skin as well. This eczema type is characterized by patches of angry and crusty skin that can also burst and ooze with pus. Not to mention it can be beyond itchy and irritating. For those going through Topical Steroid Withdrawal, the skin usually falls into this category.

For this type of eczema, you’re going to want a natural balm or ointment that doesn’t irritate the skin and that will help fight off the infectious nature of open skin. If your skin is blistering, using EczeHerbal #1 oozing eczema treatment will help wonders. This ointment is formulated using Chinese herbs, GMO free and safe for both topical use and if accidentally ingested. Plus – it can be used on pets! We also love the Hot Skin Soother for red eczema rashes. Because this type of eczema creates open sores, you’ll want to go for a treatment that is both anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. Using a Pine Tar Soap that does not contain creosote will help soothe and heal itchy skin as well.

3. Thick/Scaly Eczema

Similarly to dry eczema, this type is characterized with thick and scaly patches of skin that can either be itchy or just plain embarrassing. The patches end up thickening over time, causing a crocodile skin type effect.

To treat thickened dry skin, you’ll want to opt for a cream or ointment that not only moisturizes, but also penetrates the skin. Emily Skin Soothers for Thick, Dry Eczema is a great treatment for this type of eczema. Not only do the herbs in the formula promote circulation and accelerate healing, but it was formulated with scaly eczema and psoriasis in mind. Grass Fed Tallow Balm is also an excellent moisturizer and is extremely nourishing for very dry and scaly skin. Looking for an easy treatment for eczema you can use in the shower? This Grass Fed Tallow Soap is excellent for every one of all ages, including those on a Paleo or GAPS diet and can be used on sensitive and allergy prone skin as well.

4. Psoriasis

Although not technically a type of eczema, psoriasis is often confused with eczema. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder (which eczema is now often being labeled as well) in which the body’s immune system produces inflammation and damages healthy skin tissue. This condition affects several parts of the body such as the face, palms, scalp and genitals, but it can also appear widespread.

The best natural remedies for psoriasis have extra moisturizing properties to penetrate the characteristic thick scales that identify this skin condition. The products recommended for Thick/Scaly Eczema will do just the trick in this case too – take a peek at those just above.

For bathing, Emily Skin Soothers Natural Body Wash is extremely gentle and soothes the driest skin. It also does not contain chemicals or fragrance, so it is affective for allergy or sensitive prone skin as well. Do you prefer a soap in bar form? Try Emily Skin Soothers Soap!

5. Baby Eczema

Sweet, delicate skin deserves extra special care, so we gave baby eczema it’s own category. With all forms of baby eczema comes parental panic and anxiety. Although there are many different types of baby eczema such us baby seborrhea, cradle cap, oozing eczema and more, most of them are characterized by red, angry and itchy skin all over the body. The following eczema treatments for babies should work wonders.

For hot, angry baby skin, Emily Skin Soothers for Severe Diaper Rash can be doubled up as an ointment for diaper rash and other forms of dermatitis. It also contains beeswax that acts a barrier, as well as an antiseptic which is great for any baby eczema treatment. For babies with eczema that is dry, cracked or sensitive, using a calendula based ointment like Organic Calendula Salve is a great option. Not only is it super soothing, yet it contains a ton of vitamins, antioxidants, natural enzymes and more!

Although there are many forms of dermatitis, the treatment for eczema doesn’t need to be complicated! These suggestions are one step to relief, but if you really want to heal your skin, you’ll want to heal from within by first taking a look at your diet. Many of us don’t realize that what we put into our bodies sometimes causes the most issues externally. The Eczema Cure is a great eBook based on eliminating common trigger foods and adding gut healing foods, so that you can start healing your skin naturally today.

How to Choose a 30 Day Rehabilitation Program

If you, or perhaps someone that you know, need to go to an intensive rehabilitation facility then you may be considering a 30 day program. This is exactly what it sounds like, a month on lock down without the influences of the outside world. This can be helpful but there can be many different rehab centers to pick from, you might not even know where to begin!

The first thing to consider is the program itself, you might not be ready to make that kind of commitment. If you have work commitments then you may need to disclose your health problems to your employer. Even if you’re not working, you’ll want to consider if you’re really ready to make the change and go to a residential facility.

Most of the information that you need on these rehab centers can be found online. One thing you should think about is whether the staff are well qualified. Ideally, you want a mixture of medical professionals and care helpers that know what they’re doing with regards to treatment. There should always be medical help on hand, steer clear of places without enough doctors or nurses to cater to their capacity.

Different techniques can be used by a medical center to help their patients, some of which can be controversial. You’ll want to investigate this beforehand and see if they tie in with your own personal feeling on rehab. Some prefer a holistic approach and others like to be able to use medication where appropriate.

Further to this, some rehab facilities don’t have great reputations when it comes to their treatment plans. Look into reviews or general gossip about the place before you go ahead and sign yourself up. A month is a long time to spend in a place if you don’t agree with the treatment style. We see a lot of alternatives on the market to attempt to alleviate addictions, though not all will suit you.

The location is also important, as the chances are you will be living in the facility for the month. While it’s not essential, many people like rehabilitation programs with a luxury twist. This can help them feel like they’re more on a holiday and detoxing, rather than a less glamorous alternative. If this is the kind of thing that you like then these options do exist.

The time after a detox can be just as important as the time spent in the facility itself. For this reason, a lot of rehab facilities also offer aftercare programs to be used in conjunction with their 30 day service. This can give you the support you need even when you have your freedom back. When you leave a facility, you will be able to buy alcohol or abuse drugs once more. Ideally you want a facility that offers aftercare to mitigate the effects of going back to the outside world.

These aftercare options may come in the form of meetings or counselling, using them can make a massive difference to your recovery. Many people think that because they have managed 30 days without their substance, they’ll be fine from there on out. Unfortunately, it’s all too easy to lapse and many can even hide this if they feel ashamed of the outcome.

Many people also find it useful to know that they can extend their stay, something that not every facility will offer. Making the jump from 30 days to 60 days can seem extreme but it can be very helpful too. Even just knowing that option is there can reduce frustrations or fears about going back home. Of course, this would only be subject to an advisor allowing it and condoning that it was the best course of action for you.

Finally, the financial aspect of a 30 day program should also be on your radar. These detoxification times don’t need to break the bank but you can still shop in a smart way. Some people go to a hospital to complete a detox, but this won’t be for as long and can be very expensive. It can be much more cost effective to look for a special facility. Many won’t tell you the cost up front without a consultation but you can request these with different facilities for the best price.

All in all, a 30 day program is never going to be a walk in the park but by looking for a facility that makes it easy, you’re more likely to succeed. Positive thinking and research are your best allies here.

How To Choose The Best Cream For Face Eczema

The face is the highlight of the human body for many reasons. One reason is that it contains four of the five human senses – sight, hearing, smell, and taste. Another reason is that the face is a vessel of human expression. The face is a very vital part of the body that it has its own line of products separate from the body care section. Even when it comes to face eczema, there are special eczema creams formulated for facial application. But choosing the right facial cream for eczema is quite challenging. And the best cream for face eczema is one that manages to relieve the symptoms of eczema without causing any further irritation considering that facial skin is more sensitive than the rest of the body.

Facial skin is constantly badgered by many environmental factors. It is the first part of the body that gets hit by the sun when we go out in daylight and it catches the wind, dirt, and dust everywhere we go. Constantly hugging pet dogs and cats, gardening, and hiking along forest trails further expose our faces to more allergens. Even our own hands can trouble us if they get hold of an allergen and we touch our faces right afterward. And as if this weren’t enough, we also subject our own faces to possible irritants like make-up and face creams.

Before setting yourself on a quest in search of the best cream for face eczema, preventing its emergence should be your primary direction. The first rule that you’ll have to follow to avoid getting a red rash on your face is to constantly be aware of your actions. Most of the time, you take your face for granted and frequently touch it with your hands or let it touch against dirty places. This would not be a problem if your hands were always clean or if there are no allergens around you. Obviously, this isn’t possible so the least that you can do is be aware of your actions. By avoiding constant touching of the face or letting it rub against animal fur, dusty surfaces, and plants, you will drastically reduce chances of getting eczema in the face.

Applying make-up and other products on your face is practically inevitable these days. After all, you only want to care for your face and feel good about how you look. So when it comes to matters of facial skin care, the rule to follow is to choose face products that are hypo-allergenic. All sorts of hypo-allergenic face products are sold in the market and these products are less likely to cause negative allergic reactions. Now that you know how to prevent face eczema, you can move forward to search for the best cream that can alleviate it in case it does emerge. First of all, an eczema face cream should contain the typical ingredients found in eczema creams used for body rashes and itching. These ingredients are able to reduce eczema symptoms like redness, swelling, inflammation, and itching because they mainly act on the inflammatory process associated with eczema. These ingredients are either synthetically manufactured in laboratories or a combination of natural ingredients. Whatever your choice is, the best cream for face eczema is always the one that effectively reduces the symptoms.

In the same way that you choose face products, an eczema cream for your face must also be hypo-allergenic. When you purchase an eczema face cream, you should try it out first. Don’t apply it over all of your facial rash. Instead, apply a large amount on a small part of the rash first and then monitor the results over the next few hours. If the rash doesn’t get worse and instead diminishes, then you have selected the best cream for your face eczema.

It is not easy to try out all eczema creams for the face. But once you have found what you believe is the most superior cream for your face eczema, you can use it every time that rashes show up on your face. By keeping your face free of eczema rashes, you are also positively highlighting your face as an important body part.
